Catch the latest news from SWA-Team rider Hugh Sims-Williams

Bristol student Hugh Sims Williams, has just finished the European Windsurfing championships in Alicati, Turkey. The event brought 132 competitors from 26 countries, including several non European entries. With a final finishing position of 30th European, Hugh finished two places behind Steve Allen, 2002 PWA World Champion.

The event was a real test of endurance and consistency as we had 11 races over the 7 days, allowing for only one result to be discarded.

Steve Allen took to the Olympic board, after realising that Australia didn't have a representative for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. This new hybrid class has attracted several sailors from formula windsurfing roots, as well as the larger guys from the long boarding scene.

Hugh has put down his success to being part of the British Olympic Windsurfing Team and training with Nick Dempsey, the eventual winner of the European Championships. This is Nick's fourth major victory after his bronze medal at the Athens Olympics, showing that he has adapted well to the new board & the Neilpryde RSX.

Things are looking great for British windsurfing at the moment. Nick Dempsey has dominated Olympic racing this year, Robbie swift and Nik Baker are at the forefront of supercross and Ross Williams won the European Formula Windsurfing Championships earlier this month. Success at the top end of the sport will undoubtedly have a knock on effect on younger British windsurfers encouraging them to follow their dreams.

Of interest are the numbers of other like minded students competing at high level windsurfing from many of the European countries. Five windsurfers in the top 30 at the RSX Europeans were combining academic studies with an exciting windsurfing lifestyle. It doesn't seem to have a detrimental effect on their windsurfing prowess, however this can't necessarily be said for their academic success!

We wish Hugh the best of luck in his exams and the World Championships on Lake Garda in September.
