An Intermediate Instructor Course with Sam Ross

6th-9th April

Intermediate instructor course with Sam Ross

The Watersports Academy, Poole.

It’s hard to remember a time in the UK when it was possible to do anything related to windsurfing and be able to feel your hands and feet...but at the epic AK 11 last October things weren’t so bad. With loads of instructors teaching hundreds of beginners, I was amazed to be awarded the prize for most enthusiastic instructor, which included a ticket to Beach Break (a pretty cool prize in itself) PLUS an instructor course with Sam Ross (a very cool prize). A course for 4 days in April seemed an ideal excuse to avoid finishing my dissertation and starting exam revision. The weather wasn’t so ideal, and a friend advised me to “pack like an Eskimo”.

Arriving on day 1, the sun was out! A light breeze and small waves provided perfect conditions for applying the fast forward formula to the new sport of Rio wave riding. More wind on the second day saw everyone using the formula and ‘getting going’. Days three and four saw us trying out delivery of sessions to the rest of the group on the simulator and on the water in Poole Harbour. A rainy 6°C encouraged us to make sessions short and focused! I’m not sure many people teach wearing three jumpers and a ski jacket very often. We were all impressed to see someone getting ready to go out in a shortie wetsuit - we later saw a winter suit going on too...

The whole group learnt a massive amount, both what to teach and how to help students get the most out of sessions (although I’d guess leg breaking* is not an RYA-recommended threat) and had some entertaining times over the 4 days. So I’m now an intermediate non-planing instructor, and just need to nail planing carve gybes to get it upgraded - not a bad return on my reduced-price instructor ticket to Aussie Kiss.

Most importantly I want to say a huge thank you to Sam for the course, and for endless enthusiasm in less than ideal conditions. Secondly big thanks to The Watersports Academy in Poole who hosted the course for providing a range of kit, a choice of conditions and endless tea and coffee, and to the SWA for organising such a fantastic prize!

* No legs were broken.
