The Student Windsurfing Association

While the kids from the West side hit Bristol, The East Side Massive were causing trouble in Cambridge.  It was a small but perfectly formed event and, for the first time in living memory, not a single Bouy was interfered with!

The Cambridge 'Springfield' windsurfing event kicked off the with usual bang and much partying at Churchill college pav, this consisting of drinking and dancing to the cheesiest music ever. Congats out to Imperial College who were so keen to arrive they turned up before the Cambridge crew. Meeting and greeting continued in to the small hours until everyone piled off to sleep on various college-room floors. Put student windsurfers together in a room with a RAG charity fashion show and sell them wine at £3.20 a bottle and you can imagine the carnage that ensued.

Despite all odds, everyone turned up at Grafam reservoir and was rigged and ready to go by eleven. Unpacking kit in the snow has to be one of those things you don't do too often. Respect to the beginners who spend far more time in the water than the advanced fleet.

No more touching the buoys meant a break for the traditional slalom and out with the GPS units, kindly provided by Navman Sport tools. Scores were based on individual best speeds only. Top speeds were being hit all day despite dubious wind conditions. Locals Mikey Crisp, Joanna Walsh and Ed Ransley out stripped the rest on Technos while Southampton's hot IMCO sailor Dylan Watt came in joint second. The most impressive score of the day was Mikey's 19.0 knots, a new student windsurfing record at the time. That says something about the wind this year! The home built Techno hydrofoil overtook the rest, but unfortunately wasn't caught on GPS.

General frivolity continued with curry and a party at Jesus College. The Simpson's Nuclear theme prompted the generous adornment of yellow face paint, blue hair dye and green glow sticks. It wasn't long before the face paint had been redistributed and everyone was covered in glowing goo. No one can remember who won the boat race, but I think we can assume that a good time was had by all.

Punting on Sunday morning was of course compulsory. Nottingham uni turned up still dressed as Milhouse along with a few others still in costume. Sheepish looks from those who remember the previous nights activities and handovers all round. The girlfriend of Windsurf's features editor fortunately seemed to have gained underwear at the after party, rather than lost it. Bridge jumping on your first punting trip is a must and in true windsurfing style it was done naked. Tom from Nottingham - you have a nice bum.

Bacon was needed before anyone could face the reservoir in the afternoon and the water was braved by those too hardcore to submit to yesterday's top speeds. Prizes were dished out by RIKS windsurfing. Some awesome toys were handed out - cheers guys!
